One thing I've learned being Nasif's mommy is that you'll never know when he'll throw you a curve ball. Being a stay at home mommy, I work with Nasif a lot and really want him to feel challenged and learn to love learning. I've gotten workbooks for him and flash cards. I've made laminated letters for him. We read numerous books daily... I could go on and on. I know Nasif is really an intelligent boy, but how smart - I guess I'll never fully understand. I know he loves to pull my strings and test my patience though. For example, if I ask him which letter is this, he'll purposely give me the wrong letter. If I ask him to say his ABC's his favorite thing to do is A,B,C,D,H,R,S,T and then he'll giggle. If I give him a game and it asks him what letter is this or that - he always gets it correct on the first try. I left there standing thinking, "you little stinker!"
Anyways, fast forward... Yesterday we went to the mall for a few hours together as a family. We went to GNC to pick up some vitamins and Mahbub wanted to see the "Heart Care" vitamins. We walked over and Nasif pointed up to the sign and said, "Look it says 'Heart'." I looked at Mahbub and he looked at me and said, "There must be a picture of a heart some where." We looked but didn't see one and just thought, "Wow! How does he know that?!" and kind of shrugged it off as coincidence.
Then this morning I slept in a bit since I've been sick yesterday and today and today I was feeling much worse than yesterday. After I woke up I was in the office checking my emails and Scentsy website and Nasif came walking in with a card from his veterinary clinic toy. On the card one side says "open" and the other side says "closed". He came over to me and said, "Mommy look. This side says 'open' and this side says 'closed'." I said to him, "What?! How do you know?" I took him over to Mahbub and asked Mahbub if he had showed him the card and told him and he said "no". I decided to test Nasif and see what he would do. I flipped the card over and over in different combinations and EVERY.SINGLE.TIME he got it correct. I couldn't believe it and kept saying so. Then Nasif looks at me and says, "Why can't you believe it?" I decided to ask him one more time and he once again gave me the correct answer. It was probably close to 50 times I asked and got the correct answer. I could tell he was getting impatient and he looks at me and says, "Mommy, can't YOU read that card?" ... OH BOY!
After both of those incidents I can't help but wonder if he is picking up on words and reading them like site words. My mom suggested I get out some Dick and Jane books and start reading to him to see if he'll pick up some more words. So that is our goal. If he could read before he goes to school this will be one super happy momma!
On another note, Nasif has been requesting a Paleontology birthday party for months. Things are slowly coming together for it. I've gotten all the goodies for the boys and girls goodie bags. I have the party hats ready to put together, I have his birthday banner made and put together. I have the menu settled and I have gotten everything I need to make his invites. I think that I will probably spend the whole day tomorrow working on his invites so we can hand them out at the library play group on Wednesday. I'm planning for 25 kids. I hope most if not all of his friends will show up. I'm planning for it to be great fun especially with the fossil and dinosaur egg dig I have planned! My little guy is going to be 3 in just 9 short days!
